Buying a Franchise

If You’re Buying a Franchise, NOTHING Touches This Service for
Personal Planning, Due Diligence Analysis, and Business Selection

“When a man with money meets a man with experience, the man with the experience gets the money and the man with the money gets the experience.” And when an ‘inexperienced’ person is buying a franchise they should repeat that saying early and often.

First time franchise buyers are at a ‘huge’ disadvantage, and that should come as no surprise to anyone. They don’t understand the franchise industry, they don’t understand franchise analysis, and they certainly don’t understand their entrepreneurial selves. And why would they? They’re operating in a totally new space.

However, what’s truly unfortunate is that the resources buyers normally turn to are either self-serving or so narrowly focused that they do not provide the best or most complete help. Brokers want a commission, CPAs deal with financials, and attorneys review disclosure documents and franchise agreements. But what buyers want and need is a ‘relationship’ with a knowledgeable mentor who will provide assistance throughout the entire franchise selection process. It’s that simple. While the mentor’s role may be complicated, buyers ask for only one thing – “Just get me through the jungle”. And that’s our mission - guiding clients through the franchise jungle.

Here's how most people handle their quest for a franchise

Franchise Buyer: “Self-employment seems like a good alternative to my present career, and I’ve always wanted to own a franchise. The ‘proven systems and training’ provided by a franchisor will make business ownership far less risky.” (There are three faulty assumptions here. Do you recognize them?)

And here’s the typical franchise buyer’s plan of attack: “I’ll start with the Internet, franchise shows, franchisors, and the ‘free services’ of franchise consultants. That way I’ll get information from every angle.”Ah, excuse me, franchise consultants don’t offer free services, those would be brokers.(Do you see another error here? And no, it has nothing to do with brokerage.)

There are essentially three mindsets found among buyers.

  1. “I trust the process.”This is the most common not because it’s the easiest, but because buyers don’t have an alternative. Of course it represents the biggest gamble, but it’s a fact of life that frustration, great salesmanship, ‘hot or lost opportunity syndrome’, and other factors lead to most franchise purchases.

Buyers tend to trust the franchisor to do the right thing and they actually feel rather honored to be ‘awarded a franchise’. Yes, most franchises are purchased without great understanding of the business or the contract. Franchisors have the upper hand, and they exercise it.

  2. “I trust the process, but you better believe that I’m going to verify.”This of course, is a better approach, but ‘whatever is going to be verified’ is generally only part of the big picture. An attorney (hopefully a franchise attorney), a CPA, or a franchise consultant is retained to review the paperwork or ‘discuss the opportunity’ from the vantage point of the ‘hired help’. If the opinion is favorable, the deal is usually cemented, but if unfavorable, one of two things will happen.

    • The purchase is still made because the ‘dream of owning’ a particular franchise’ is stronger than the negative opinion rendered; or,
    • The buyer walks away, but resumes the search without any better plan than before. Time and money are wasted as concepts are paraded in front of hired professionals for a fee.

  3. “I have a clear vision of myself as a prospective entrepreneur and the type of business that ‘fits me’. And, I know what steps I have to take in order to make that vision a reality.”Of course, very few buyers operate at this level of confidence and authority, but if you’d like to be among that number, then it’s time to examine our program.

Welcome to the Only HOLISTIC FRANCHISE SELECTION PROCESS

We provide a unique system that allows franchise buyers to reverse the role they normally play and assume authority of the selection process. This is how the system works, and these are the steps you will take if you adopt it to make better, more informed decisions about franchise ownership:

STEP 1 – You begin by completing “The Focus Program for Emerging Entrepreneurs

Your cost for Step 1 (The Focus Program) is $99

Use this link to “The Focus Program” for a full description, but suffice it to say it is the only insight system for creating a word picture (a Personal Entrepreneurial Portrait) of who you are relative to the world of self-employment. You will be able to answer the following critical questions.

  • Should I really be in business for myself?
  • How can I predict my reaction to a franchise environment?
  • What type of business might fit my style, my finances, and my needs?

You will gain insight into your entrepreneurial self and your potential for satisfaction in the role of business owner and franchisee. On completion you will know more about yourself than you know today, and you will be able to decide if you should take the entrepreneurial journey further or say goodbye to the idea of self-employment and/or franchising all together. Either way, this is great learning experience for all prospective entrepreneurs. (The cost is negligible; the benefits are priceless.)

STEP 2 – Initiate Entrepreneurial Counseling

Begin with the Focus Program and then decide if ‘personal entrepreneurial counseling’ will help you move along with greater clarity. Whereas the Focus Program is self-study (although interactive with audio and journaling), this step establishes the mentoring relationship.

There are two objectives:

  1. Mentoring will help resolve any questions or concerns about your entrepreneurial goals and solidify your Personal Entrepreneurial Portrait (the compass for your journey), and put down logical roots for selecting a franchised path.
  2. A matrix will be developed that connects your ‘portrait’ to an overview of the franchise industry. Your personal education in franchising begins here.

STEP 3 – Identify and Analyze Appropriate Franchises

We will ‘not’ make a decision for you, but through continuous discussion you will pare down your options, learn to investigate a franchise opportunity, and develop your own analytical style. You will interact with franchisors and franchisees, and as your confidence grows, your direction and choices will become clearer. You will be mentored throughout the process.

Finally a fully informed and mostly ‘unemotional’ decision can be made about a purchase.

(Here’s a classic Q&A regardizng the truth about franchise consulting.)

Read what real clients have to say

“I struggled with the idea of buying a franchise because I didn’t know if it was right for me, let alone which one to choose. I needed a mentor focused on ‘my big picture’, not someone’s opinion about a franchise or a franchise agreement. Your ‘process’ slowed everything down so that I could get to know myself as an entrepreneur and create a logical, comfortable ‘plan’ for making decisions. In a short period of time I replaced confusion with confidence, and knew my direction. I’ll continue to reap the benefits of what I learned in through this process, and I’d definitely do it all over again.”

"It really was a fascinating discussion of the opportunity I was considering. Your fee may go down as one of the best investments I ever made. It's up there with buying Dell in 1995. Anyhow I'm doing a lot of thinking this morning about my future. I'll be calling you every month for the rest of my life if each time I can save $250K!"
